Operator of chicken farm accused of slave conditions

Myanmar migrant labourers yesterday filed a compliant with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) asking it to investigate a Lop Buri-based chicken farm owner for alleged violation of rights and suppression of workers.

The 14 workers, accompanied by members of the Migrant Worker Rights Network, told NHRC member Prakairat Tantirawong that they were made to work from 7am to 5pm at the chicken farm in tambon Khok Tum of Lop Buri’s Muang district, then forced to work overtime from 7pm to 5am. Workers added that they earned a daily wage of Bt230.
They also said they were not given social security or paid for overtime. The workers claimed that they were only allowed out of the farm for two hours a week under the escort of a company representative.
The migrant workers called on the NHRC to check if the poultry industry’s implementation of good governance and migrant labour protections were on par with international standards, and called on the industry to take responsibility for the alleged abuses.
