Junta gives more power to NBTC to shut down media

The Nation Council for Peace and Order has issued a new order to empower the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission to monitor and shut down the broadcast media.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha invoked Article 44 in his capacity as the NCPO chief to issue the order that was published in the Royal Gazette Thursday.
The order empowered the NBTC to monitor the broadcast media against airing reports that are deemed detrimental to the ruling system with the King being the head of the state or reports that may destabilise the national stability and damage the good morality of the people.
The NBTC will also monitor against the reports that violate the coup order No 97/2557 dated July 21 2014.
The radio and TV stations that violate the criteria will be immediatley shut down by the NBTC and the stations cannot  appeal against the closure order with any court.
