Krabi deputy mayor caught accepting bribe

Krabi deputy mayor caught accepting bribe

A Krabi-based deputy mayor was caught red-handed in a sting operation yesterday after he demanded money from a landowner.

Anti-graft officials and police arrested Anusorn Wangphon, deputy mayor for the Tambon Koh Lanta municipality, when he received Bt2 million cash and a cheque for Bt5 million as bribes.
“Police have brought him to Ao Nang Police Station for further questioning,” an informed source said.
The source said the National Anti-Corruption Commission planned the sting operation after receiving a complaint from a land buyer last week. The complainant bought land on Lanta Yai Island for Bt80 million.
“Anusorn has allegedly asked for Bt20 million [in bribes] from the landowner, saying that the money would go to various people to facilitate the issuing of land title deeds for the plots,” the source said.
The first bribe instalment was Bt7 million. The sting operation was set up when the landowner was supposed to hand over the first instalment to Anusorn.
