Smart Thai students return with a rich haul of medals

A TEAM of young Thai students has brought home a total of 57 prizes comprising 27 gold, 20 silver and 10 bronze medals as well as the “Star” trophy for highest overall score at the 2016 World Mathematics Invitational (WMI).

The contest was held in Malaysia from July 15-19. The 70-strong team arrived to a warm welcome from teachers, parents and members of the media on Tuesday night. 
Chief of the Thai Talent Training project, Phumthep Khlang-urai, said 63 students from Mathayom 1-3 participated in this year’s WMI and competed against peers from nine countries, including the United States, Taiwan, South Korea, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nigeria and the Philippines. 
Participants were selected from the Thailand Mathematics Academic Camp nationwide, he added.
Another group of young Thai students came home with two gold, two silver, two bronze medals as well as two special prizes at the 2016 International Exhibition for Young Inventors held in China’s Harbin City from July 16-19, according to the Office of Basic Education Commission. 
The students arrived at Suvarnabhumi Airport last night. 
This year’s contest saw 83 inventions submitted from nine countries – China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand.
