Prayut sends condolences to Merkel over German carnage

PRIME MINISTER Prayut Chan-o-cha has sent a message of condolences to German Chancellor Angela Merkel following the carnage at a Munich shopping mall on Friday, in which nine people were shot dead and 16 wounded.

“I have learned with profound sadness the loss of lives and injuries caused by the cowardly acts. In this sorrowful moment, I, on behalf of the Thai government and Thai people, would like to extend my deepest sympathy and condolences to Your Excellency, and through you, the bereaved families of those who were affected by the violent acts,” the PM said in his letter.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the people of the Federal Republic of Germany during this very difficult period,” he added.
Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai also sent a separate message of condolences to his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier over the tragedy, according to the Foreign Ministry.
“I am saddened by the deaths of innocent people as well as injuries inflicted on many others. During this sorrowful and difficult moment, please allow me to extend to Your Excellency and the people of Germany my profound condolences for these terrible losses,” Don’s letter said.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry reported yesterday that no Thais in Germany were affected in the latest mass shooting in Munich.
Ministry spokesman Sek Wannamethee, who is director-general of the Information Department, said yesterday the Thai Embassy in Berlin and Thai Consulate in Frankfurt reported that no Thais were injured in the incident.
However, all Thais living in Munich were advised by the missions to avoid public places and to closely monitor relevant news from official agencies.
The Royal Thai Embassy in Berlin released the statement warning all Thais residing in Munich and nearby cities to avoid going to crowded places and take extra care when not at home.
Thais were also advised to keep updated with the latest relevant news until the situation returns to normal.
Meanwhile, Metropolitan Police have stepped up security at the Germany Embassy in Bangkok.
