NGOs shun NHSO chief selection process

NGOs shun NHSO chief selection process

The representatives of non-governmental organisations have refused to sit on a committee tasked with selecting a new secretary-general for the National Health Security Office (NHSO).

There are five NGO representatives on NHSO’s 31-member board, but they have all shunned the upcoming selection process.
“We have refused to sit on the selection committee because we see no reason as to why the board resolved not to endorse Dr Prateep Dhanakijcharoen for the post,” Saree Aongsomwang, one of the NGO members on the board, said on Monday.
On July 4, Prateep emerged as the sole candidate for the top NHSO post, but the board voted 14:13 not to endorse him.
Prateep, a former NHSO deputy secretary-general, has now taken the case to court.
Under the law, the members of the selection committee must come from five sectors. So, in response to the NGO representatives’ protest against the new selection process, the board decided yesterday to get representatives from local administrative bodies to join the selection committee instead.
“We believe this approach should be okay. We hope the new selection process will find the most suitable person for the post,” Public Health Minister Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn said yesterday in his capacity as chairperson of the NHSO board.
