Passenger vans to be banned from Victory Monument to ease traffic

Passenger vans to be banned from Victory Monument to ease traffic

BANGKOK’S VICTORY Monument area, which has long been a hub to for vans travelling to various major routes, will soon become off-limits to public-transportation vans.

Passengers, however, will not be adversely affected, authorities have said, as they promised to provide shuttle buses between the area and key bus terminals such as the Southern Bus Terminal, the Mo Chit Bus Terminal and the Ekkamai Mo Chit Terminal between 6am and 9am and between 3pm and 7pm.
The ban is intended to ease traffic congestion in the area, particularly during rush hours.
Authorities plan to impose the restriction for an experimental period between September 21 and 28. If it works, it will be implemented permanently from October 25.

Colonel Suwit Ketsri, deputy commander of the Second Cavalry Division King’s Guard, said the ban responded to the National Council for Peace and Order’s (NCPO) mandate to better regulate traffic in the capital.
Speaking as chairman of the committee in charge of regulating public-transportation vans, he said vans around the Victory Monument would be transferred to other zones, possibly at parking areas of the main BTS stations.
