Four held for ‘gang-rape death’

Four held for ‘gang-rape death’

A 19-YEAR-OLD girl who died during an alleged gang rape in a Bangkok hotel on Wednesday might have been drugged and taken to the hotel against her will.

Four young men are in custody following the assault in the hotel in Soi Paholyothin 11. The four men reportedly confessed that they invited the girl to a party in the hotel and admit having sex with her after they got drunk but they deny killing her.
Police say CCTV footage of the area suggested that the girl was in a helpless condition, possibly due to drugs or alcohol, when the men took her into the hotel room.
Metropolitan Police Division 2 chief Pol Maj-General Charoen Srisasalak said footage showed the group met the girl elsewhere and that she was carried by the accused to the hotel room.
Suspect Khanakorn Thong-aim, 19, surrendered to police at the scene on August 3. Other suspects, Khongkrapan Sangmeenoi, 21, Khettawan Wiwatthananon, 21, and Tha-watchai Buppamatanang, 28, were detained the same day.
Police suspect the group carried out the offence without the victim’s consent, as she only knew Khanakorn through Facebook, Charoen said.
A pill was found under the girl’s tongue, he said. It may have been a sexual stimulant. The medical examiner has said the girl’s death resulted from heart failure. An autopsy result was still pending.
The accused men were initially charged with raping a defenceless woman and gang-raping her to death.
The four were sent to apply for a court order for detention yesterday. Police objected their release on bail.
