Myanmar's flood crisis deepens

YANGON - Suffering in Mandalay, Ayeyawady, Magway and Bago regions from flooding is rising due to swollen rivers, including the Ayeyawady.

Since July, flooding has hit the whole country with some remote villages in urgent need of help.
The Mandalay regional ministry of social welfare, relief and resettlement said there were more than 72,000 flood victims from in excess of 11,000 households in the region which had opened more than 50 temporary shelters.
“The number of victims is on the rise. And there are still unreachable areas. The flood victims are provided assistance as much as we can,” said an official from the ministry.
An estimated 147,000 people had been evacuated in Magway Region by August 5 as the Ayeyarwady River floods.
“We’re working with governmental and non-governmental organisations to provide assistance. There are more victims than the last year,” said MP Kyaw Htay from Magway.
Aunglan Township said nearly 10,000 residents had been evacuated because of the Ayeyawady River with over 20 schools closed and more than 1,000 acres of plantations submerged.
The township has also opened two temporary shelters for flood victims.
Bago’s Pyay Township has opened temporary shelters for more than 24,000 flood victims after the Ayeyawady flooded.
Ayeyawady Region’s Hinthada District has more than 17,000 victims taking shelter in nearly 70 temporary camps, according to official figures.
