Typhoon Chanthu approaching eastern Japan

Tokyo - Typhoon Chanthu is threatening eastern Japan Tuesday with weather authorities warning of flooding, high waves and swollen rivers in the region.

The season's seventh typhoon is expected to bring strong winds and torrential rains to eastern Japan later in the day and to the north-east early Wednesday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
As of noon (0300 GMT), the typhoon was 190 kilometres east-south-east of Hachijo Island, travelling north-north-west at 25 kilometres per hour (kph), with maximum sustained winds of 72 kph and gusts of 108kph, the agency said.
Rainfall of up to 250 millimetres was forecast for the Kanto region and the north-east and up to 150 millimetres for the northern island of Hokkaido by Wednesday noon, the agency said.
