President visits quake-hit Bagan

President Htin Kyaw visited Bagan archeological zone on August 25, where many historic pagodas were damaged by the strong earthquake.

The president said it would take time to repair the damaged pagodas.

He met officials from Bagan Archeological Research Centre, other government departments and the township authorities. He visited damaged pagodas, such as Sulamani, Pahtodawgyi, Ananda and Htilominlo.

“I don’t want visitors to lose their chance to visit the ancient zone during the restricted period. Some pagodas were not damaged. Visitors should be allowed to visit undamaged pagodas,” he said.

The president also asked for help for a Spanish tourist who was injured in the quake  and receiving treatment at Mandalay General Hospital.

“The archeological preservation is very delicate. We should make the best of the quake damage. Japanese and Korean experts will come to help. Unesco also offered help. We will follow their recommendations,” he said.
