Typhoon Namtheun hits southern Japan

Tokyo - Typhoon Namtheun made landfall in the southern Japanese island of Kyushu early Monday with authorities warning of flooding, mudslides, high waves and swollen rivers.

The season's 12th typhoon was expected to bring strong winds and torrential rain in wide areas of western and southern Japan after it directly hit the city of Nagasaki overnight.

As of 7 am (2200 GMT Sunday), the eye of the storm was 70 kilometres west of Shimonoseki City, travelling north-east at 20 kilometres per hour (kph), with maximum sustained winds of 64.8 kph and gusts of 108 kph, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

The typhoon was expected to weaken further to a tropical depression later in the day, the agency said.

Last week Typhoon Lionrock battered north-eastern Japan, leaving 19 dead and eight missing.
