The Justice Ministry has named a prominent forensic doctor, Khunying Dr Porntip Rojanasunan, as an adviser to the committee investigating the mysterious death of a detainee.
Porntip, who previously headed the Central Institute of Forensic Science (CIFS), has solved many high-profile cases during her career.
“I have already appointed her [Porntip] as an adviser,” the ministry’s permanent secretary Charnchao Chaiyanukij said yesterday, while discussing the progress of an investigation into the suspicious death of 66-year-old Tawatchai Anukul on August 30.
Tawatchai, a suspect in an illegal land-deeds case, died while in custody at the Department of Special Investigation (DSI). The DSI said the suspect hanged himself using socks. Questions emerged, however, as to why the preliminary investigation showed Tawatchai also suffered a ruptured liver.
Police and the Justice Ministry have since launched investigations into the death. The committee, including several forensic doctors, was set up by the ministry.
Porntip said yesterday the committee had not yet conducted a second autopsy on Tawatchai, as it was awaiting results from the Institute of Forensic Medicine first.
