Kasetsart student who nearly drowned in pond ‘improving’

THE KASETSART University student who almost drowned in an on-campus incident on Friday is showing further signs of recovery, his father said yesterday.

Chokchai Thongnuakhao, 19, got into difficulties in a pond in the university’s Sri Racha campus, where he is enrolled in the International Maritime College programme.
Though the student’s condition was initially critical, the hospital confirmed on Monday that he was recovering well.
Amporn Thongnuakhao, the student’s father, said his younger brother was watching over his son and had called him yesterday to say the teenager’s condition had improved.
“He can now sit up,” Amporn said.
University officials said it was not unusual for students in the maritime programme to jump into the pond and other students were on hand to stop Chokchai drowning.
National Human Rights Commissioner Chatsuda Chandeeying said yesterday that all educational institutions should call on their students to organise and engage in constructive activities only.
“They should hold meetings to tell their students what they should and should not do in order to prevent possible adverse impacts from their activities,” she said.
She added that although freshmen were not required to participate in activities held by seniors, they often did so under peer pressure.
