Thousands flee Methawaw as clashes intensify

Fighting between the Myanmar Border Guard Forces (BGF), along with the Tatmadaw, and the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) in Methawaw, Kayin State, has intensified, according to local sources.

Fighting between the Myanmar Border Guard Forces (BGF), along with the Tatmadaw, and the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) in Methawaw, Kayin State, has intensified, according to local sources.
 
The two sides have begun shelling each other with heavy artillery in recent days, said an unnamed commander from the BGF.
 
“The fighting continues. Last night, there was a battle near a DKBA base. Soldiers were wounded,” said the commander.
 
According to the BGF, three DKBA members have been killed, and one has been wounded.
 
A total of 3,452 residents from 22 villages in the region have fled their homes to Myaing Gyi Ngu, where the Myaing Gyi Ngu Sayadaw is providing necessary assistance to the refugees.
 
The Min Pyae Sone Company and other donors from Myawady recently donated 500 sacks of rice, edible oil, bottles of drinking water and instant noodles to the refugees.
 
Kayin State’s chief minister and other officials visited the Myaing Gyi Ngu region to provide assistance to the refugees.
 
Linn Kyi, a Myaing Gyi Ngu resident, said much support is needed for the refugees.
