Freed Norwegian hostage headed to Philippine army base

DAVAO, Philippines - A Norwegian hostage freed by an Islamic militant group in the Philippines a year after being kidnapped was on his way to a jungle army camp for debriefing before a meeting with the nation's president, officials said Sunday.

It is the end of a gruelling ordeal for Kjartan Sekkingstad who was abducted from a high-end tourist resort in September 2015 by notorious kidnapping-for-ransom gang the Abu Sayyaf along with two Canadians who were later beheaded.

The Abu Sayyaf freed Sekkingstad on Saturday, handing him over to another Muslim rebel group which is engaged in peace talks with the government and at whose camp he spent the night.

The Norwegian resort manager was en route Sunday to a military camp to undergo a medical check-up and debriefing, local military spokesman Filemon Tan told AFP.

"He is en route to joint task force Sulu," Tan said referring to a military camp on the heavily forested island of Jolo in the remote Sulu archipelago.

Sekkingstad would then be flown on to meet Duterte in the southern city of Davao, chief government peace negotiator Jesus Dureza said.

Tan said he had no knowledge of any money changing hands to secure Sekkingstad's freedom.
