Sharks and tigers roam forests looking for encroachers

Marine park and forest officials under the White Sharks and King of the Tigers taskforces yesterday jointly inspected forests along the coasts of Trat and Krabi provinces and found irregularities with some properties suspected of encroaching upon protecte

The White Sharks, or Chalam Khao, taskforce under the Marine and Coastal Resources Department, led by its chief Ratchai Pornpha inspected an area of 120 rai, part of which is sitting on the Tha Som forest reserve. A well-known agro company has set up a shrimp farm and pier in the area.
Ratchai said the properties are illegal and must be removed even though some owners have produced land-deed documents. He added that officials will seek more information and take the case to court.
Meanwhile, the National Parks Department’s King of the Tigers, or Phaya Sua, led by its chief Chaiwat Limlikhit-aksorn, have been inspecting plots reportedly encroaching into forest reserves in Krabi’s Koh Lanta and Ao Nang since Monday and have found some irregularities.
According to Chaiwat, stone pillars erected to demarcate privately owned land as well as new roads in the Ao Nang mountainous area has led to suspect there may be some irregularities in land-deed issuance. The forests in the area are pristine. He said land documents will be further inspected.
