Tight security near Grand Palace during holiday period

Prime Minister's Office Minister Suwapan Tanyuwattana on Saturday said that 1,500 police officers would be deployed to provide security in the Sanam Luang and Grand Palace area during the three-day-long holiday period (October 22-24).

He urged people heading to pay homage to HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej to use water transport, as it was the most convenient way.

Suwapan, in his capacity as secretary to a command centre set up to monitor the situation, said 200 additional medical staff would also be around to provide services to people needing assistance. He urged chartered vans and buses that brought people from other provinces to park at eight designated outskirt locations and  let the people board city buses to the Sanam Luang and Grand Palace area.

He said the centre would hold another meeting on October 26 to plan measures for accommodating the huge numbers of people expected to pay their respects to the late King's royal urn from October 28.
