Bangkok fire damages red-shirt activist’s home

A FIRE broke out in the house of singer and red-shirt activist Arisman Pongruangrong yesterday, causing minor damage and leaving the singer with a slight burn to his foot. No one else was hurt.

Arisman’s house is located in Bangkok’s Ratchada area.
The blaze broke out in a Buddhist tabernacle located on the third floor of one of the two buildings that make up the home. Firemen took about 30 minutes to put out the fire.
Arisman said the fire was caused by an electric candle overheating, after it was left unattended for more than three hours. When the fire first started, there were 10 people in the house including his family members, he said.
Arisman was on the first floor of the affected building when he saw smoke coming from upstairs. He said he rushed to the tabernacle and tried to extinguish the fire but it spread very quickly and destroyed the 10-square-metre room.
He said the damage bill had yet to be assessed, but he would leave it for the insurance company to take care of.
Arisman was a famous singer before he became a prominent red-shirt figure in 2010.
