Transport ramped up for public to pay homage to King

The Ministry of Transport has made preparations in a bid to service the huge number of people who will start travelling to the Grand Palace Saturday to pay homage before the Royal Urn of the late King Rama IX.

Transport Ministry permanent secretary Chartchai Tipsunave said a meeting chaired by Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith discussed the accommodating the mourners and security measures.
Ferry boats will be provided to shuttle mourners at major points, including Sathorn Central pier near the BTS Saphan Taksin station and the Maharaj pier where a large number of passengers are expected.
The Bangkok Mass Transit Authority will provide 390 scheduled buses free of charge for 25 routes plus another 200 buses for 15 routes to connect key locations on the way to the Sanam Luang ground in front of the Grand Palace.
Regular buses will also run at an increased frequency and stop at Rattanakosin Hotel, the roundabout in front of Reserve Officer Training Corps’ headquarters, a spot under Phra Pinklao bridge and in front of the former Government Lottery Office, all in the neighbourhood of Sanam Luang.
The Transport Company will add more trips for long-distance bus routes between Bangkok and other provinces to accommodate 300,000 passengers daily.
The Marine Department will deploy 140 officials and 20 volunteers to oversee safety measures at all piers and will run eight patrol boats to maintain security on the Chao Phraya River. Passengers can ride ferry and express boats on the Chao Phraya River free of charge between 10am and 8pm.
Thanks to an additional fleet of river cruise operators, about 100,000 passengers will be accommodated by boat daily.
The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) is expecting about 100,000 train passengers daily with an increase on public holidays and weekends. The SRT will add more passenger carriages on the Bangkok-Surin, Bangkok-Khon Kaen, and Bangkok-Pitsanulok routes as well as more trips on the Bangkok-Chachoengsao, Bangkok-Nakhorn Pathom and Bangkok-Thonburi routes.
