Young ‘drug couriers’ arrested at Bangkok bus terminal

Police arrested two drug courier suspects in two separate busts on Saturday at the Bangkok Southern Bus Terminal on Borommaratchachonnani Road, deputy city police chief Chaiyaporn Panich-attra told a press conference yesterday.

A freshman at a university in the Ramkhamhaeng area, Narong Panchan, 20, was arrested at about 5pm, allegedly in possession of a |package containing three kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, or “ice”, at a petrol station close by the bus |terminal.
Narong said a fellow Sura Thani youth, identified only by the nickname “Pete”, had paid him Bt20,000 to |collect the package from a male |motorcycle rider and pass it on to a |van driver at the terminal.
He said he had never transported drugs before and had received only an advance payment of Bt1,500.
Over an hour later, police arrested a teenager, 17, who was described as a school dropout who had a habit of drinking the stimulant kratom, and seized 60,000 amphetamine, or “yaba”, pills in a bag in the terminal’s parking lot.
The suspect, whose name was withheld due to his age, reportedly confessed that a 20-year-old identified only by the nickname “Max” hired him to pick up the bag from Soi Hathairat 15 and board a bus to Songkhla’s Ranot district in exchange for Bt10,000.
Police are looking for the people who supposedly hired the two youths, Chaiyaporn said.
Chaiyaporn added that police were concerned that young people were being employed as drug traffickers and pledged that authorities would monitor transport hubs.
