Thammasat attempts to hold litter-free graduation

Speaking as Volunteers for Dad centre director, Thammasat University deputy president Prinya Thaewanarumitkul said the university was finding solutions to manage rubbish during the commencement ceremony and if the system works it could be applied to the royal funeral at Sanam Luang
Prinya said the centre had received 30,000 commemorative glasses from Amway, 20,000 of which would be sold to people attending the commencement ceremony, while others would be used at the volunteer centre.
“The glasses, which have the Thai digit for the number ‘9’ and royal quotes printed on them, will be sold for Bt10 each. Every baht we get from selling these glasses will be spent in producing water glasses to give to mourners at Sanam Luang,” he said, adding that distributing glasses was a way to encourage mourners not to rely on single-use containers and reduce rubbish in the area.
He added that Amway had also sponsored two water containers installed at the university and in Sanam Luang for visitors.
He said the university had cooperated with Chanasongkram Police Station to monitor and control traffic around the university to ease traffic.
“We also facilitate those who will come to congratulate graduates by arranging parking for 500 cars and more boat trips, as we have cooperated with Supattra Company Limited and River City,” Prinya said.
He added that the pier at the university would be repaired and improved to be able to hold 50 to 60 passengers per trip. 
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration in cooperation with the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Bureau and the Royal Thai Army and Navy will send officers to piers around the Grand Palace and Sanam Luang to provide security to passengers, said Yuthapan Meechai, a secretary to the Bangkok governor.
Yuthapan added the security measures would also be implemented during Loy Krathong festival.
