Sick people told to stay away from Sanam Luang

Sick people told to stay away from Sanam Luang

Sick people have been advised to stay away from the royal funeral until well – for their benefit and potentially to prevent diseases being spread.

The advisory from city officials came as the Peace and Order Maintaining Command assured the public that police would have no problem managing the crowds of mourners at Sanam Luang and nearby Thammasat University, which is holding graduation ceremonies this weekend.
The deputy permanent secretary of Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, Wantanee Wattana, stated that many people were getting sick while attending the royal funeral because the weather was changing and diseases were being spread.
“The Peace and Order Maintaining Command is concerned about people’s health. So we would like to ask sick people to avoid attending the ceremony at Sanam Luang and they should wait until fully recovered, as there is still plenty of time to pay respects to the late King,” Wantanee said.
“For those who are already at the ceremony, if you are unwell, please do not hesitate to seek the medical service from our volunteer doctors and wear a facemask to prevent disease transmission.”
She revealed that some people travelling to Sanam Luang had severe illnesses and had to be sent to hospital.
She said it was imperative that people attending the funeral were healthy because they would be forced to wait in line a long time before entering the Throne Hall inside the Grand Palace.
Thammasat University is staging its graduation ceremony on both days this weekend at its Tha Phrachan campus.
Pol Colonel Atthawit Saisueb, Metropolitan Police deputy commander, said officers could handle the greater number of people.
According to Thammasat University, 3,415 new graduates attended the graduation ceremony yesterday, while today there would be 4,648 new graduates attending the event.
