Biggest street mural in the making in Penang

The city will soon have another street mural that will stake a claim to being the biggest in Penang when completed.

The 15.24m high and 7.62m wide mural depicting a woman is being painted by Canadian street artist Emmanuel Jarus (pic) on a facade of the 1st Avenue Mall at Magazine Road here.

The 24-year-old, who painted his first mural at a cafe here last week, said his second work depicts up-and-coming artist Caryn Koh.

Jarus’ art coordinator Tan Chor Whye introduced him to Koh.

“Koh took me around Kuala Lumpur and one of the places we visited was Batu Caves a week ago. The mural of Koh is based on a few photographs that I took of her at Batu Caves,” he said.

Jarus attracted much attention while working on the mural using a boomlift yesterday.

He said he started painting the mural on Thursday evening and would be able to complete it by tomorrow evening.

“This is my first trip to Penang and it is the first city in Asia that I’ve painted in. In big cities like Berlin, London or New York, the street art scene is established. A lot of my friends in the street art scene have been talking about Penang.

“Penang is beginning (to establish itself in street art) and there are a lot less restrictions.

“So, you can really do a lot,” said Jarus, who has painted murals in Sweden, France, the United States and Germany, among others.

Tan described Jarus as a rare talent.

“He did not use any projector to help him paint. He paints in a freestyle manner. Its very rare to see this,” he said.

Tan said Koh is also known as “Dr Artist”, as she is a medical doctor based in Kuala Lumpur.
