Security agencies monitoring Thais showing interest in IS

Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha Tuesday instructed national security agencies to investigate a report from the Australian Federal Police about some Thais being reportedly involved with the Islamic State (IS) by following the group’s Facebook page and websites.

Thailand’s security agencies will investigate this issue as a precaution as IS-led attacks have been affecting thousands in different countries, the PM said.
Separately, Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan said he has already ordered the Special Branch Police Bureau and the Immigration Police Bureau to check on information suggesting that some Thais were following the IS through social media. Though so far there is no sign of any Thai nationals providing funding to the IS, he said.
Prawit’s comment comes in response to an earlier news report yesterday that deputy police chief Pol General Srivara Ransibrahamakul claimed that some Thai nationals were providing funds to the IS and that he had instructed six police divisions to seek more information on the issue.
