Retiree remembers last conversation with wife killed in bus crash
A RETIREE broke into tears yesterday as he remembered the last conversation he had with his wife, who was one of 18 killed when a passenger bus plunged into a deep ravine in Uttaradit’s Muang district on Tuesday.
“I can’t accept this. We were together for more than 30 years. She was kind and loved making merit,” Paitoon Anuwarn, 63, said at a hospital in Uttaradit province, where his wife’s body was being kept.
He said he had been supposed to pick up his wife Yaowalak at CAT Telecom headquarters in Bangkok on Monday.
“She called me Monday morning, saying she was heading back and had bought a shirt for me,” Paitoon said.
Twenty other passengers were injured when the bus plunged down the ravine.
Police have been unable to interview the driver due to his serious injuries.
The bus, heading from Phrae to Bangkok, ran off a winding downhill road on Doi Khao Pueng Mountain into a ravine at Haiha village in Tambon Ban Dan Nakham at about 10am.
Transport Co, which operates the bus, is insured by the Viriyah Insurance Company Limited. The family of each person killed in the accident will be paid Bt800,000, while the maximum compensation for each injured person will be Bt80,000.
