Former UN chief Kofi Annan arrives in Myanmar's Rakhine State

Sittwe - More than 100 people protested against former UN secretary general Kofi Annan as he arrived in Myanmar's restive Rakhine State on Friday morning.

Annan arrived in the state's capital Sittwe to undertake his role as chair of the Rakhine Advisory Commission which was established as an independent body by Myanmar's government in September.
Protesters lined up in front of Sittwe's airport holding banners saying "No to foreigners' biased intervention in our Rakhine state'saffairs."32-year-old Buddhist protester Tun Tun Win from the Arakan National Party which organised the protest said he thought Annan was biased towards the Muslim community.
Annan will travel to northern Rakhine State on Saturday where violence has been escalating since an attack on two border guard posts on October 9 in which nine police men died.
The military has since prevented foreign media and humanitarian aid from entering the area.
Thousands of Muslim minority Rohingya have fled to neighbouring Bangladesh and the UN recently expressed concern about "ethnic cleansing". Rakhine State is one of Myanmar's poorest states and has been beset by interfaith violence between Buddhists and Muslims since a 2012 outbreak between the two groups left almost 200 people dead
