Lawyer to appeal bail revocation for ‘Pai Dao Din’

Lawyer to appeal bail revocation for ‘Pai Dao Din’

A HUMAN-RIGHTS lawyer plans to file a petition with the Khon Kaen provincial court today, seeking to overturn the rulings of the Region IV Court of Appeal revoking bail for student activist Jatupat “Pai Dao Din” Boonpatararaksa.

Jatupat was arrested for sharing a recent BBC Thai article.
Pawinee Chumsri from the Thai Lawyers for Human Rights, who is representing the student, said lawyers still had hope that Jatupat would be released. She said lawyers had not yet sought bail for him after it was revoked last Thursday.
“We will focus on petitioning against the bail revocation before seeking bail again,” she said.
The petition was in response to the Appeal Court’s decision on Tuesday to uphold the previous ruling revoking the student’s bail. The bail was revoked in response to Jatupat’s continuing social-media posts, which allegedly incited public unrest.
Jatupat was accused of violating the lese majeste law and the Computer Crime Act after he shared a BBC Thai article that allegedly insulted to the monarchy early this month.
The article has been shared more than 2,400 times, yet Jatupat has been the only person charged so far.
He was initially released on bail but the court ruled last Thursday that he had broke his bail conditions, which prohibited public incitement.
Meanwhile, the Thai Academic Network for Civil Rights yesterday released a statement appealing to the court to reconsider the bail revocation. The statement said Jatupat had not broked the bail agreement, adding that he still had an exam to complete and that he would not be a flight risk.
The network statement also said that Jatupat was within his rights to post the comments that he did after his arrest, which should not be grounds for bail revocation.
The student had also left his previous posts unedited, which showed that he did not intend to tamper with the evidence, the statement added.
