Taiwan urges China to maintain stability of the Taiwan Strait

Beijing should "share the responsibility" for maintaining the cross-strait relationship between Taiwan and China,Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen said Saturday.

Since she took over the leadership in May, Beijing's attitude toward maintaining stable relations with Taipei had gradually changed for the worse, Tsai said at a press conference.

"Beijing is going back to the old way of dividing, suppressing and even intimidating Taiwan," she said.

"We hope it's not a decision made based on Beijing's policies," Tsai said.
Tsai added that Taiwan's friendliness towards China and respect “for the facts of history" remained unchanged.

According to the "one-China" policy, China's ruling Communist Party requires other nations to avoid formal diplomatic recognition ofTaiwan, although the United States maintains informal channels to the island nation.

A December 2 phone call between Tsai and US president-elect Donald Trump made international headlines.

The call risked souring US relations with China as Trump later said he would not feel bound by the decades-old "one-China" policy.

Asked by journalists about whether there was any chance that Tsai will meet up with Trump's transition team when she is passing through the US next month on her way to Latin America, Tsai refused to give an answer.
In the past, China has urged the US to block such stopovers.
