Army provides emergency aid to flood victims

THE FOURTH Army Region has been instructed to give urgent aid to flood victims in southern provinces hit by a second round of rainstorms since December 30.

Army commander-in-chief General Chalermchai Sittisart said that officers were working around the clock to provide assistance and he expected the situation to improve soon.
In Trang, the worst-hit districts of Rassada, Huay Yot and Muang were declared flood-disaster zones as water levels continued to rise yesterday affecting about 10,000 residents.
In Na Yong district’s Tambon Na Yong Nua municipality, about 500 shops as well as temples, banks, schools and state offices were inundated by floodwaters between 20 centimetres and 1.5 metres deep. A one-kilometre section of Trang-Phatthalung road was impassable to small vehicles.
In the southernmost province of Yala, 12 schools in Muang and Raman districts under the Yala Primary Educational Service Area Office 1 were flooded and closed indefinitely. Eleven families in Raman, who were evacuated three days ago, were unable to return to their homes, which remained under one-metre-deep floods due to runoff from the Sai Buri River.
In the Kayu Bokoh municipality area, a group of residents also camped along the Raman-Asong Road yesterday as their homes were flooded.
In Pattani province, many roads to housing estates were flooded as runoff from upstream Narathaiwat and Yala added to the Sai Buri and Pattani rivers, which passed through several districts of Pattani before reaching the sea.
In Nakhon Si Thammarat, four southern trains, two on the Bangkok-Kantang route and two on the Bangkok-Nakhon Si Thammarat route, dropped off passengers at the Thung Song Train Station to let them continue the rest of journey by bus as many sections of the railway were flooded.
In Phatthalung, three days of heavy rain have caused flooding in 11 districts, particularly Khuan Khanun, Muang, Sri Nakarin and Kong Ra, where homes were reportedly hit by 1.5-metre-deep flooding. Many sections of Phetch Kasem Highway and Asia 41 Highway were also flooded.
Rainfall in Pa Phayom district was reported to be the highest at 25cm, followed by Sri Banphot district’s 23.5cm.
Authorities also warned residents near the Banthat Mountain Range in Kong Ra, Sri Nakarin, Sri Banphot and Pa Phayom districts of possible landslides.
