Police chief calls for quick result in Bangkok abduction-murder probe

BANGKOK police chief Lt-General Sanit Mahathavorn has ordered investigators to speed up their search for evidence against a group who allegedly abducted a woman from her Bangkok apartment before killing her, a police source said on Saturday.

Supaksorn Polthaisong, 28, is believed to have been strangled by one of three male fugitives in the case  – former soldiers Chaiyuth Benchat, 41, and Panumet Meela, 34, plus ex-policeman Samart Saengsin, 50 –  after being taken from her flat in Nong Khaem district on December 13, the source said. Investigators continue to pursue a romantic motive for the crime, the source added.

Supaksorn’s body was found in a shallow grave covered by concrete at an abandoned resort in Kanchanaburi’s Muang district on Wednesday.

Four other suspects have been detained under court orders –Pol Colonel Amnuay Pongsawat, 58, the superintendent of Ban Pong police station in Ratchaburi, who is accused of hiring others to abduct Supaksorn; Niwat Suaythong, 32; Amnuay’s alleged mistress Kannikar Krumram, 38; and Phumithat Phiboonsawat, 24. All have been refused bail.
