Princess apologises for arriving late

IN a rare moment, HRH Princess Chulabhorn Valayalaksana offered a humble apology to flood victims, saying she was held up for several hours due to health problems.
Assigned by His Majesty the King, the Princess was scheduled to start meeting people affected by floods in Surat Thani province at 2pm on Thursday. But she could not arrive on time because she developed a high fever in the morning.
After taking medication and injections, she got well enough to carry out the royal work only after 6pm.
“I owe you an apology,” the Princess said, as she pressed her palms together – a gesture of asking for forgiveness.
Speaking to flood-affected people at a power plant in Surat Thani’s Phun Phin district on Thursday, the Princess said she decided to not cancel the planned audience because she really wished to meet them and offer moral support.
During the audience, she handed out relief items from the King and herself to flood-affected people.
“I promise that I, the Chulabhorn Research Institute and the Chulabhorn Hospital will deliver assistance to you faster in the future,” the Princess said.

Surat Thani is among 12 provinces hit by floods this year.
In just two months, Narathiwat and Nakhon Si Thammarat have already seen three rounds of flooding.
Floodwaters had just subsided in Nakhon Si Thammarat, when it started pouring again and floods returned.
Nakhon Si Thammarat Governor Jamrern Thippayapongtada yesterday cancelled a planned Big Cleaning Day operation because floodwater started spreading again after heavy downpours.
Initially, local officials planned to clean up their town after floodwater subsided.
“Officials are now closely monitoring water level instead,” Jamrern said.
All waterfalls in Nakhon Si Thammarat have now been declared off-limits, as authorities are worried that flash floods may hit such attractions too.
The Nakhon Si Thammarat Rajabhat University also suspended classes and related activities for safety reasons.
In Narathiwat, locals were advised to watch out for possible flash floods and landslides.
At the Ban Sa Mor School in Ra Ngae district, floodwater swamped classrooms during the day.
Heavy rain has been forecast for several southern provinces including Narathiwat till next Wednesday.
In the face of rough weather conditions, small trawlers have been advised not to go out to the sea. Waves up to a few metres high are expected in the lower part of the Gulf of Thailand.
