Soi Dog issues urgent plea for cat adoptions
The Phuket-based Soi Dog Foundation Friday issued an urgent plea for animal lovers to consider adopting rescued cats at its shelter on the island as it has been inundated with abandoned kittens and cats in desperate need of medical care and shelter over the last few months.
The foundation, whose main shelter is located at Mai Khoao in Phuket, said it decided to make February the month for cats adoption because of the crowded shelter.
It said animal lovers in Thailand to seriously consider adopting a rescued cat from the Mai Khao shelter during the month of February when looking at acquiring a lifelong pet companion for their family.
The foundation said all pets available for adoption have been brought back to good health under expert medical care and have been vaccinated and spayed or neutered, which is also a huge cost saving for potential adopters, unlike pets purchased from pet shops.
“By adopting a cat today, you could be a hero by single-handedly saving a life, as adoption frees up more space in the shelter for other animals in desperate need of saving,” the foundation said in the press statement.
“Your potential new cat could save your life, too. Having a pet has been attributed to significantly lowering blood pressure, as well as lowering the risk of heart disease. The mere act of stroking a cat for a few minutes has been shown to release ‘feel good’ endorphins in the brain and with their soft, touchable fur and calming purrs, cats are great stress-relievers. They’re adorable, loving, easy companions that can make you super happy and healthy,” the statement added.

We have so many animals that would make wonderful pets, and we are really keen to find them safe and loving homes with Thai and ex-pat families. Whilst some Thai animals may take time to adjust to their new owners and environment, they make extremely loyal and loving pets, particularly animals saved from tough lives on the streets that seem to understand they’ve been given a second chance.”
Potential adopters will need to complete a short interview with the adoptions team.
“We conduct an interview with potential adopters to get to know them better and to make sure we’re matching the right pet for the right reasons with the people in the right home,” Colman said.
