Appeal Court refuses to let ‘Pai Dao Din’ free on bail

THE COURT of Appeal in Khon Kaen on Wednesday upheld a criminal court decision to reject activist Jatupat “Pai Dao Din” Boonpatraraksa’s bail request, on the grounds the activist showed a tendency to ridicule state power and could cause trouble for authorities.

The Region IV court said the lese majeste law, which Pai was charged with breaking, constituted a security case with a severe penalty, which might lead him to abscond.
The activist’s lawyer unsuccessfully appealed to the court on Monday to reverse the decision by the Khon Kaen Provincial Court last week and discontinue the pre-trial detention.
The activist has been detained since late December last year for sharing an article by BCC Thai, which allegedly constituted lese majeste. The activist is charged with violating the prohibition against lese majeste in Article 112 of the Criminal Code and the computer crime law.
