Phuket seas scoured for missing Russian tourist
The search for missing Russian tourist Dmitrii Somov, 48, continued on Friday after he went missing in the sea off Koh Racha Noi in Phuket on Thursday.
On Thursday evening Sergay Larichev, three of his compatriots who had also been in the boat, and the speedboat driver went to Chalong Police Station to report that Somov had been swept away by waves while diving near Koh Racha Noi.
Larichev said that he, Somov and two other friends had rented the speedboat from Rawai Beach on Thursday morning, to dive and fish in the sea near Koh Racha Noi, located 21 kilometres from Phuket. Strong waves and current pushed the Russians away from the boat but Larichev and the others were rescued by a passing by fishing boat, which returned them to the speedboat.
When an initial search for the missing Somov proved in vain, they returned to shore and alerted police for help.
