NLA endorses UN initiative to prevent forced disappearances

NLA endorses UN initiative to prevent forced disappearances

The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) on Friday resolved to endorse the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance (ICPPED), which seeks to strengthen mechanisms to protect human rights.

The legislature voted 205-0 with 4 abstentions to accept the human rights instrument of the United Nations intended to prevent forced disappearances, defined in international law as crimes against humanity.
The ICPPED was proposed to the assembly by Justice Minister Suwapan Tanyuwattana.
Suwapan said the adoption of such an initiative reflects Thailand’s commitment to protecting human rights, investigating acts of enforced disappearance, bringing those responsible to justice, and ensuring that enforced disappearance constitutes an offence under its criminal law, among many others.
The ICPPED was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 20, 2006 and came into force on December 23, 2010.
