'Happy' solution found to collecting Shinawatra taxes

An urgent meeting on the failure to collect tax from the family of former premier Thaksin Shinawatra has come up with a solution that should make the government happy, Pol General Chaiya Siri-amphankul, secretary general of Anti-Money Laundering Office, said on Monday.

The meeting was held and chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam on Monday.
Chaiya told reporters after the meeting, "I cannot reveal the details of the meeting but what I can say is that the government will be happy with the solution." Wissanu and Chaiya then left the meeting to meet Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha.
Wissanu said separately that Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha will reveal the information on the case.
The meeting was held after the Revenue Department admitted on Sunday that it was unlikely to collect taxes from the Shinawatraregarding their controversial sale of Shin Corp shares in 2006.
This was due to the fact that the five-year tax summons limit would expire at the end of this month, the agency said.
The admission was made despite the Revenue Department coming under considerable pressure from the Office of the Auditor General.
Auditor-General Pisit Leelavach-iropas has also threatened to take legal action against the head of the Revenue Department over tax disputes with the former prime minister's family.
