Environmental march to Satun faces police checkpoint

Environmentalist groups that are marching from Songkhla to Satun are expected to face a security checkpoint before reaching their destination on Wednesday afternoon.

After starting the long march under the theme "Walk with Love from the Mountain to the Sea" across the Malay Peninsula last Friday, the group had reached its penultimate destination before arriving at the Pak Bara seaport site in Satun's Langu district, Khao Kuha Communal Rights Protection Association secretary-general Eakachai Isratha said.
However, he said he had been told that a police checkpoint had been set up on the way to the site, which might block protesters. He added that the marchers were not worried about the situation and the checkpoint might not be a problem.
"We will arrive at our destination at around 3pm today and we will read our manifesto at the sea to conclude our long march from the mountain to the sea, after which we will attend the first public hearing on the Pak Bara seaport project tomorrow," he said.
