NBO urges Dhammakaya Temple’s new abbot should be an outsider

NBO urges Dhammakaya Temple’s new abbot should be an outsider

The National Buddhism Office (NBO) has pushed for the appointment of an outsider as Dhammakaya Temple’s new abbot.

The office’s director Pol Lt Colonel Pongporn Parmsneh said on Wednesday that he had written to the monastic chief of the Pathum Thani province on Monday saying that the new abbot of the scandal-hit Dhammakaya Temple should be an outsider.
“The appointment will ensure transparency in the monastic investigation into the temple’s senior monks,” Pongporn said.
Phra Dhammachayo, the temple’s former abbot, and Phra Thattacheevo, the temple’s former acting abbot, are to face monastic probes.
Both monks are facing legal charges. They were recently stripped of their monastic ranks.
