Lahu activist’s mentor reports ‘bullet’ threat to police

National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) member Angkhana Neelapaijit escorted the mentor of slain Lahu activist Chaiyapoom Pasae to Na Wai police station in Chiang Mai's Chiang Dao district on Saturday so he could file a report with police about receiving a threat to keep silent about the case.

The man, whose name was not revealed, told the NHRC he found a bullet in front of his house on Wednesday night, after he tried to defend the activist’s name.
Angkhana and other NHRC members visited the northern province to get more information from related officials about the extrajudicial killing of Chaiyapoom at an Army checkpoint near his village on March 17. They are seeking to establish if the soldier used excessive force.
Army spokespeople have claimed the soldier acted in self-defence, but colleagues of the Lahu teenager have voiced serious doubts over reports of him being armed with a knife and a grenade, plus whether he would traffic drugs.
