280 non-Thai students in Tak receive ID cards

A total of 280 children of stateless migrants at a school in Mae Sot district of Tak province on Wednesday were given identification cards in a joint project between the Interior Ministry and the Education Ministry to register migrant children.

The project, which human rights lawyers in Tak have campaigned for, has in total enabled 2,000 children of stateless migrants to register for ID cards.
Surapong Kongchanthuek, a human rights lawyer of the Law Society of Thailand, said the ID cards did not bequeath citizenship but allowed the migrant children to be registered by the state. He added that about 6,000 more migrant students in five border districts of Tak had yet to be registered under the project.
In the ceremony on Wednesday at the Mae Sot School in Tambon Mae Sot, authorities distributed ID card to 280 students.
