Juthamas and daughter to seek bail again after Appeal Court turns down request

Juthamas and daughter to seek bail again after Appeal Court turns down request

The lawyer of former Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) governor Juthamas Siriwan will seek a new bail request for his client after the Appeal Court denied a temporary release request on Friday.

Lawyer Tanakorn Waekwaree said Juthamas and her daughter Jittisopha insisted they would fight on to seek another bail request.
The court allows a new appeal but defendants need to submit new evidence and arguments for the court to consider, the lawyer said. However, he did not specify when the new request would be submitted.
The Appeal Court on Friday rejected bail requests by Juthamas and her daughter, citing the possibility the defendants might flee the country due to the severity of their sentences for corruption.
On Wednesday, the Central Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases sentenced Juthamas to 50 years in prison for demanding and receiving a bribe of more than US$1.8 million (Bt60 million) to enable an American business couple to obtain the rights to run the Bangkok International Film Festival.
Jittisopha was sentenced to 44 years in jail on the same charge.
The pair have been behind bars since Wednesday following a delay in the court’s ruling on their bail applications.
