Prayut pledges to limit use of Article 44 power to situations of necessity

The head of the National Council for Peace and Order, General Prayut Chan-o-cha, on Tuesday affirmed that he would limit the continued use of his power under Article 44 of the interim charter to situations of necessity.

In response to a call for revocation of the use of Article 44 of the junta-imposed interim constitution of 2014, Prayut said that ordinary citizens did not have problems with the enforcement of the Article, so why were politicians so concerned about it.
“Or [is it that] they [politicians] want to live without being regulated by any... laws? I don’t’ know – you [reporters] have to ask them,” Prayut, who is also prime minister, said after the Cabinet’s meeting on Tuesday.
He added that he had no plan to lift or cancel any of the orders issued under Article 44.
