Number of Bangkok constituency MPs could be cut to 30

The number of constituency MPs in Bangkok is likely to be reduced to 30 following the new Constitution, a City Hall deputy governor has said.

The initial conclusion was reached after a meeting between Deputy Bangkok Governor Pol Lt-General Amnuay Nimmano, Chainarong Thienmongkol – the election chairman for Bangkok – and the Election Commission’s (EC) deputy secretary-general, Metha Silaphan, on Tuesday at City Hall.
In the previous general election, Bangkok had 33 MPs for 33 constituencies, but under the new 2017 charter the nationwide number of constituency MPs will be reduced from 375 to 350.
The meeting agreed to reduce the number of constituencies on the eastern side of Bangkok to 21, and on the western side to nine, Amnuay said.
He explained that the matter had been considered on the basis of population density.
However, the deputy governor added that the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and the EC would meet several times more before reaching a final decision, and would then make an official announcement.
