Ombudsman asked to probe officials’ remarks over governor in child-sex allegations

Officials of the Federation of Assistant District Chiefs of Thailand said on Friday they would ask the Ombudsman to investigate Interior Ministry officials' alleged support of Mae Hong Son governor Suebsak Iamwichan over child-sex allegations.

Suebsak was accused by a victim’s parent of buying the sex services of a minor at Bt1,000 from the province's forced prostitution ring.
Suebsak, who maintains his innocence, was transferred to an inactive post at the ministry pending the result of a probe.
Federation chairman Boonyarit Nipawanit and team were worried that the officials' suggestion of Suebsak's innocence, while the panel led by Interior Ministry deputy permanent secretary Prayoon Rattanasenee was investigating the allegations, might influence the panel's opinions and adversely affect the victim’s morale.
They wanted the Ombudsman to check if such an expression was an ethical breach by civil servants and to set guidelines for future practices.
