Chulalongkorn savings scam suspect ‘providing useful information’

The former chairman of Chulalongkorn University Savings Cooperative, who surrendered this week to face fraud charges linked to an alleged lottery scam that caused hundreds of millions of baht in damages, has provided useful information, said Central Investigation Bureau chief Pol Lt-General Thitirat Nonghanpitak on Tuesday.

Dr Sawat Saengbangpla, 79, who turned himself into Crime Suppression Division (CSD) investigators at 2am on Monday, was to be brought to a criminal court on Tuesday as authorities apply for an initial period of detention. Police have objected to his release on bail on the grounds that the reported Bt540 million in damages suffered by 78 victims constituted a major crime, and that he could tamper with the evidence.
Thitirat’s comment was made as he checked the case report at the CSD head office this morning, adding that he would announce details of the case at a press conference later on Tuesday.
