Ministry scrambles following nurse protest
Public Health Minister Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn called an urgent meeting on Thursday morning to address the Cabinet’s decision against designating nearly 11,000 nurses as civil servants.
The Cabinet’s May 9 dismissal of a ministry proposal to add 10,992 more civil service positions for nurses sparked outrage among temporarily employed nurses and threats to resign in protest.
Piyasakol said before the meeting that Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha was concerned about the fallout and the Cabinet resolution could be modified. Piyasakol said the ministry still has vacant civil-service positions for nurses.
