Chaiyaphum prepares for spectacular ‘Siam tulip’ show

Chaiyaphum in northeastern Thailand is gearing up for an influx of visitors to the province coming to enjoy the beauty and natural wonder of “Siam tulips” in full bloom.

Locally known as “Dok Krachiao”, the Siam tulip is a pinkish-purple wildflower that is unique to this province. The botanical name is Curcuma and the flower has a butterfly-like appearance. Since the Siam tulips bloom only once a year, in the early part of the rainy season, Chaiyaphum holds a flower festival during this period each year.
Chaiyaphum Governor Chusak Trisarn said the Dok Krachiao Festival 2017 will be held for four months, from June 1 to September 30. The official opening of the festival is scheduled for June 17 at Pa Hin Ngam National Park in Thep Sathit district. The festival, which has become a major cultural event in the province, will also include folk arts and cultural shows and a bazaar of community products.
The governor said a public relations campaign would be launched online this year in order to make this festival better known to both Thai and foreign tourists. The upcoming festival will provide an opportunity for all visitors to see magnificent Siam tulip fields covering an area of more than 240 acres at Pa Hin Ngam National Park.
He said the national park is the most beautiful place in Thailand to observe Siam tulip fields in a natural setting. The province is making arrangements to facilitate traffic flow, provide sufficient accommodation, and ensure safety for visitors to the festival. Visitors can enjoy hiking and getting close to nature around the park.
About 340 kilometres from Bangkok, Chaiyaphum province is rich in hills and rock formations, as well as flora and fauna. The province also boasts beautiful waterfalls. Pa Hin Ngam National Park, in particular, is located on a mountain with cool weather all year round.
Visitors to this national park can enjoy a scenic view of the whole province at the edge of the park, about 800 metres above sea level.
