Security tight at Bangkok venue for public hearing on health bill

Police and soldiers gathered in front of the Vayupak Convention Centre in Bangkok on Sunday morning to facilitate the last public hearing on the National Health Security Bill.

The event is to be held one day after a similar public hearing in Khon Kaen province had to be called off after opponents of the bill took over the stage. As of press time, opponents of the bill lie down in front of the conference room where the public hearing is taking place.
The bill has much significance for ordinary Thais as it will have an impact on the universal healthcare scheme, which has offered almost all types of medical services to Thais for free. About 48 million Thais are covered by this scheme.
Supporters of the bill advocate the concept of co-payment.
