Public hearings on strategy and reform bills ‘sufficient’, state legal body says

THE Council of State insisted on Tuesday that two critical bills on national strategy and reforms that will pave the way for long-term development have been subject to sufficient public hearings, as required under the new charter.

Distat Hotrakitya, the council’s secretary general, said after the Cabinet meeting that public hearings required under Article 77 of the Constitution had no definite timeframe on when proposals under the new law should be enacted, especially before the charter was promulgated.
The charter was promulgated on April 6, and the Democrat Party has said it will petition the Constitutional Court to rule on whether Cabinet’s submission of the two draft bills to the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) two days before the charter was promulgated violated the charter or not.
People involved in the drafting the two bills also organised public hearings beforehand, the secretary general said.
